Harry Potter?

March 30, 2010 - 6:34 am 11 Comments

Okay, here’s for all you Harry Potter bashers. Just read it and then try to critisize the series or JKR. I found this on Mugglenet.com in the editorials section.

Let’s pretend you were given the following challenge: construct within your own imagination a world, supposedly existing side-by-side with our real world, which will captivate people of all ages all over the world in a story of ulimate good versus ultimate evil, which is also a coming-of-age story, which is set to take place over seven key years within a thirty-six year time period, which incorporates mythical elements from cultures all over the world, which incorporates hundreds of characters, and which takes place over seven novels, some of considerable length. You also need each story to contain elements of fantasy, mystery, and adventure, and keep each book in the series logically consistent with the others, while aging the characters believably.

You should have romantic themes which launch hundreds of thousands of fan fictions. You also need to have elements of mystery or ambiguity within the series not resolved until the last few chapters of the last book. Do this in a lucid literary style which shifts easily from comedy to drama to fantasy and deals with every theme known to mankind, such as death and life, love and hatred, family and friends, race, science and magic, government and civil disobedience, the press and the abuse of the press, sports, fame and obscurity, war and peace, the mistreatment of animals, growing up and growing old, giving up and perseverance.

Oh, and while you’re at it, rediscover the joys of reading for an entire generation, reinstitute the lost art of parents reading to children, doing so in a way that only the snobbiest and most misanthropic of critics can find fault with. And if you don’t mind, invent some of the most memorable characters in all of literature, and throw in making a few billion dollars for yourself, your publishers and a movie studio.

And do all of this, if you don’t mind, during a seventeen-year time period that begins while going through some of the most trying times of your life, and ends after having gone through a type of fame that few people have ever experienced. And try to stay sane and focused during the entire period. And throw in having a baby or two.

Does anyone else think that, in Joanne Rowling’s Harry Potter series, we have a witnessed not only a once-in-a-lifetime feat, but a once-in-forever one?

Her success and the quality of the books is amazing. Especially considering she was practically homeless at one point.

One thing I love about the books was mentioned in that summary – people of all ages love these books. From my now 73 year old Mom, to me to my 11 year old niece. My niece is already asking us if we’ll all go to the new Harry Potter them park. lol

I can’t remember any book that had kids at a bookstore at midnight – Star Wars movies or concerts, yes. Books? no.

What happens at a book launch?

March 30, 2010 - 6:34 am 2 Comments

I know this is a bit of a weird question but I am going to a book launch in a few weeks and I was curious about what these events are usually like. I have never been to one so I was wondering if anyone could give me an idea of what to expect?
Maybe I should be more specific. How formal is it? Do they have speeches and presentations? Is it relatively short or is it likely to go on all evening?

They talk about the book.

What can I do to improve my photography?

March 30, 2010 - 6:34 am 4 Comments

To start off I want to say that I am an absolute amateur; however, I love taking pictures, and have finally acquired an SLR. This is just a hobby, but I would like some critique on my photos so I can improve. Please be honest, but not harsh. I definitely understand these photographs are not going to launch my career :) So far I have read only a few articles online and I have begun reading a beginners book so any critique will help!! http://www.flickr.com/photos/39649259@N04/

Your photography is quite good. When I tried to improve my photography skills, my teacher told me to look at an object at a different angle than the one people would expect to see. It’s amazing how many different ways you can look at a single object. Next time you go taking pictures, play around with your exposure as well. Different lighting can make or break a picture.

Music Launch Of The Japanese Wife on CNEB

March 30, 2010 - 6:08 am No Comments

Recently in Cinemax Mumbai, a Press Conference was held by Saregama India Ltd. for their film The Japanese Wife. Almost the entire team of The Japanese Wife was present at the conference including ace filmmaker Aparna Sen, Actor Rahul Bose, Veteran Moushumi Chatterjee, Apurv Nagpal (MD of Saregama). The promos were showcased to the media which was present in large number.
The promos exhibited yet another finest work of Aparna Sen as she is one of the connoisseurs’ of artistic cinema in India. The Japanese Wife strikes a chord and is sure to leave an indelible mark on the audience as it will portray a real sensitive love story.
When asked Aparna as to what prompted her to make a film on Kunal Basus book The Japanese Wife, she answers I got inspired with the fact that how 2 peoples 17 years marriage has more integrity even though theyve never met than any other marriage Ive ever seen in real. And I immediately knew that this was the film I had to make. I wanted to create a film which is minimalistic but poetic so I had to face a lot of challenges while making the movie.
Apurv Nagpal expressed that he went berserk reading the novel and is grateful to Aparna for turning this film as beautiful as the book. He said I love Moushumi Chatterjees role in the film for the great vivacity she shows in her character.
The Press conference was followed by the album launch of The Japanese Wife where all the songs are handpicked by Aparna Sen. Followed by the launch; the Media was gifted with a TJW notebook designed by Mr. Ajay Shah.
Rahul Bose who had worked with Aparna Sen in fantastic films like Mr. & Mrs. Iyer and 15th Park Avenue couldnt stop appreciating Aparna for her brilliant talent of film making. If the audience had gone for Mr & Mrs. Iyer because it was a romantic love story then Im sure double the amount of people will go for The Japanese Wife, alleged Bose.
Veteran Moushumi Chatterjee who is making a comeback in films after 5 years added, Ive been a lazy person and when I was approached for this film, I knew I was getting a fantastic opportunity to make a comeback. I seriously recommend everyone to see this film because its full of love yet painful and so please watch the movie and enjoy the pain.
The Japanese Wife is a beautiful love story of an Indian man who writes to a Japanese woman. The pen-friends fall in love and exchange their vows over letters, then live as man and wife without ever setting eyes on each other their intimacy of words tested finally by lifes miraculous upheavals.
