Red and Black in Haiti – Book Launch – Matthew J. Smith, Ph.D., part 3

March 30, 2010 - 6:08 am No Comments

In 1934, the Republic of Haiti celebrated its 130th anniversary as an independent nation. That same year, another sort of Haitian independence occurred, as the United States ended nearly two decades of occupation. In the first comprehensive political history of post-occupation Haiti, historian Matthew Smith argues that the period from 1934 until the rise of dictator François Papa Doc Duvalier in 1957 constituted modern Haitis greatest moment of political promise. He will explore this theme in a lecture based on his recently published book titled Red and Black in Haiti: Radicalism, Conflict, and Political Change, 1934-1957. The lecture is sponsored by Florida International Universitys Latin American and Caribbean Center, School of International and Public Affairs, and Digital Library of the Caribbean, as well as the Haitian Heritage Museum. The event is part of LACCs 12th Annual Haitian Summer Institute.

My story start constructive critcism/what do you think? Would you read it as a book?

March 28, 2010 - 3:12 am 2 Comments

Ok so I posted a question about a story idea, here is the start. I am 16 and english is not my first language so tips and corrections are welcome. Also as I am not a native speaker I sometimes phrase things odd so if this is a problem please say. Enjoy, here goes:

The smell of smoke filled my lungs, my hands trembled as the adrenaline coursed through my veins. This was it. My breath came in short gasps forming a misty clouds in the chilled night air, the crowd fell silent, I stepped into the ring, forcing a smile I held the hoop above my head. Marius took his stance, his expression calm and focused as he lit the arrow. My breath caught sharply as he pulled back on the bow. One. Two. Three. The arrow soared through the hoop, igniting the inner ring creating the illusion of the entire hoop being on fire. I let out a sigh of relief as the crowd erupted into applause, Marius winked, I couldn’t help but laugh then, grinning broadly I stepped forward bowing deeply, allowing the rush of exitement to take over from the knotting in my stomach. I launched into the backflip, then the free cartwheel, ending with a front split I smiled at the crowd as Marius and Stefan performed their jaw-dropping tumbling routine which made several people in the audience gasp more than once. From the corner of my eye I saw Stefan’s muscular form crouch a few feet to my left. Marius stepped onto his shoulders, now panting with effort Stefan stood slowly, balancing Marius on his shoulders, I stepped forwards nodding to Marius, indicating I was ready. I ran, gathering speed, bounced on the trampoline and somersaulted through the air. Marius caught me and I, balancing on his hands pushed up to a handstand. It was a long way down to earth, my palms were slippery with sweat, I let go with one hand, the human tower wobbled and the crowd held their breath. We each regained our balance and tho the rhythmn of the music I changed positions, split then stag, then down into pike. Tiny beads of sweat rolled down my forhead and my abs burned. With a last burst of energy I pushed back up to full handstand and then jumped down waving to the audience, dancing to the music as Stefan and Marius formed a line. The music ended and we bowed deeply, the rest of the troupe re-entered the ring, took a final bow and then we all rushed to the tent exits to sell our souvineers. I climbed into my bunk, my eyes itching with exhaustion, when I heard Stefan and Marius calling to me "Catalina, come on, it’s a party, you’re not the baby cousin now, come on, your dad, he’ll never know. Don’t worry about him, come on." I peeked out the wind ow of our caravan, the frosty night air stung my nose and cheeks " No I’m 14 years old and I’m too young to party this late and you shouldn’t be encouraging me. I’m tired see you in morning." I slid back in and remembered suddenly "Oh, and if you guys are smoking weed, smoke it now, we’ve got school tomorrow, well today, in a few hours." I grinned mockingly "don’t want anybody turning up to a new school stoned now, do we? " I curled up in bed smirking, haha bet that killed the mood of the party quite a bit. I felt my eyes closing and I did not resist the beckoning wave of sleep washing over me, I pushed all my worries away and let it take me out to the sea of sleep.

The shrill ringing of my alarm clock pierced the silence, then again, groggily I covered my ears with the pillow. It rang again this time louder, and louder and louder. "Shit!" It was Monday.

It’s a good start, you might want to be a bit more clear of where the setting is in the first part. In your dialog, be sure that use commas or semicolons. The phrases all seemed to run together without pause. Read it aloud and see where you would pause; add punctuation there.

Other than that, the description was excellent. Great job.

Most children ‘happy and healthy’…….current events?

March 28, 2010 - 3:12 am 10 Comments

http://uk.news.yahoo.com/pressass/20071119/tuk-most-children-happy-and-healthy-6323e80_1.html

Children’s Secretary Ed Balls said the review showed that for most children "things are good".

His assessment was made as the review of more than 100 research studies into the lives of children and young people in England was launched.

100 research studies???????????

Why then, do we still read/hear sad stories of children being killed by their parents? Children that have been on the books of Social Services, handed back to their parents and then they are murdered by them. In most cases the children are abused by torture of whatever means
Children being murdered is a rare occurrence??????? Cavorim, you should start watching the news & reading the papers. They say ignorance is bliss but in your case ignornace is blindness

I think most children are doing ok, I tend to forget this in the job I do, as 99% of the kids I work with are not ‘doing ok’ in some area of life be it school, home or whatever.

In terms of the social work bit of your question, for every tragedy you hear of in the press, how many other kids do you think are protected by the system – you don’t hear about them because of confidentiality laws – there are lots as I am sure you can imagine.

You would only hear about the kids I work with if they were shot – or shot someone else or got an ASBO or something but you wouldn’t hear about the other 90 % of my caseload of 30 odd kids who do well and are diverted away from offending behaviour and make successes of themselves as our society and media are far too hung up on negativity.

I have a very polarised view of young people in situations of abuse, negelct, poverty, isolation and exclusion, and I am so grateful when we have my partners children to stay and I get to hear their personal successes and achievements and those of their freinds as it reminds me that I work with a very specific section of society and the whole of society is not the same.

March 27, 2010 - 8:22 am No Comments

Recently in Cinemax Mumbai, a Press Conference was held by Saregama India Ltd. for their film The Japanese Wife. Almost the entire team of The Japanese Wife was present at the conference including ace filmmaker Aparna Sen, Actor Rahul Bose, Veteran Moushumi Chatterjee, Apurv Nagpal (MD of Saregama). The promos were showcased to the media which was present in large number.
The promos exhibited yet another finest work of Aparna Sen as she is one of the connoisseurs’ of artistic cinema in India. The Japanese Wife strikes a chord and is sure to leave an indelible mark on the audience as it will portray a real sensitive love story.
When asked Aparna as to what prompted her to make a film on Kunal Basus book The Japanese Wife, she answers I got inspired with the fact that how 2 peoples 17 years marriage has more integrity even though theyve never met than any other marriage Ive ever seen in real. And I immediately knew that this was the film I had to make. I wanted to create a film which is minimalistic but poetic so I had to face a lot of challenges while making the movie.
Apurv Nagpal expressed that he went berserk reading the novel and is grateful to Aparna for turning this film as beautiful as the book. He said I love Moushumi Chatterjees role in the film for the great vivacity she shows in her character.
The Press conference was followed by the album launch of The Japanese Wife where all the songs are handpicked by Aparna Sen. Followed by the launch; the Media was gifted with a TJW notebook designed by Mr. Ajay Shah.
Rahul Bose who had worked with Aparna Sen in fantastic films like Mr. & Mrs. Iyer and 15th Park Avenue couldnt stop appreciating Aparna for her brilliant talent of film making. If the audience had gone for Mr & Mrs. Iyer because it was a romantic love story then Im sure double the amount of people will go for The Japanese Wife, alleged Bose.
Veteran Moushumi Chatterjee who is making a comeback in films after 5 years added, Ive been a lazy person and when I …
