Was Crookshanks from the Harry Potter series, James and Lily`s pet cat?
In PoA Hermoine gets a cat known as Crookshanks
Crookshanks was around thirteen years old when purchased from Diagon Alley
She knew straight away that Scabbers was reall Peter Pettigrew, She helped Harry alot and she took an immediate liking to Sirius
Before the launch of the last book many fans thought that Crookshanks would play an important role
Now, in Deathly Hallows; Harry finds a letter from Lily Evans (his mum) to Sirius
The letter says when talking about Baby Harry`s new broom "you know it only rises about two feet off the ground, but he nearly killed the cat and he smashed a horriblle vase Petunia sent me for Christmas" after the letter Harrys thoughts go "They had had a cat … perhaps it had perished, like his parents at Godric`s Hallow … or else fled when there was no body left to feed it" Now the cat couldn`t have died or someone would have mentioned it and we know that it must have fled as besides Moldy Voldy Harry was the only other living soul in the house but if the cat had died there would have been atleast a mention
so i figure that the cat was crookshanks she and sirius went hunting down peter but he turned into the rat crookshanks then would have chased it to wherever the weasleys found him, such as a pet store
she is right age and all so could crookshanks be the cat mentioned in the letter … which is why she used chase scabbers?
to b honest i originally thought that crookshanks was lily in animagus form and had somehow survive moldy voldy
JK lyks readers to find things out for themselves and if im correct she made a very gud behind the scenees plot but why did she just make crookshanks vanish, making her last mention in DH chp six pg 81 "Hermoine was now sitting in the far corner, her fluffy ginger cat Crookshanks at her feet" and then crookshanks doesnt appear anymore in the bk
I had actually though of that, but I think that Lily wold have mentioned if her cat was part Kneazle, in her letter or in some other way.

No, I don’t believe Crookshanks was Lily’s and James’ cat. Crookshanks was Hermione Granger’s cat. Nice theory though, but I don’t think even a magical cat, could live that long. Besides, Crookshanks was just after Pettigrew because he could sense that he was different and Sirius was able to talk to Crookshanks.

I don’t believe that Crookshanks could be the same cat. The reason that Crookshanks knew that Scabbers was Peter Pettigrew is because he is half cat and half kneazle, which is an intelligent cat-like creature that can detect untrustworthy people.
J.K. Rowling has also confirmed that Crookshanks is not an animagus. I think that Crookshanks was just a half cat, half kneazle creature that Hermione bought and who helped out a bit, and is not as deep a character as he may appear to be.

Firstly, Crookshanks is a he.
And this crossed my mind too, but JKR has answered this question. No, Crookshanks never belonged to the Potters. Nor is he an Animagus, as that also crossed my mind. The reason Crookshanks is such an intelligent cat is because he is half Kneezle.
As for what was going on with Crookshanks in the book, I would assume he just lived with the Weasleys at that time.
