What do you Germans think of this – One in four Germans think Nazi rule was not all bad, poll reveals?

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/worldnews.html?in_article_id=488155&in_page_id=1811

"Eva Herman, 48, said at a book launch that while there was ‘much that was very bad, for example Adolf Hitler,’ there were good things, ‘for example the high regard for the mother’ under the Nazis.

She later explained: "What I wanted to express was that values which also existed before the Third Reich, such as family, children and motherhood, which were supported in the Third Reich, were subsequently done away with."
its all in the link I didn’t have enough space to post it all at once

Unfortunately most people answering this will only look at what most people know the Nazi for. To accurately answer this everything they did has to be looked at. I already looked at some articles.

Construction of the Autobahn, low unemployment, low crime rate, strong sense of family values were examples of what people thought was good about the Nazi era.

Construction of the Autobahn. This is Germany’s network of highways. This goes to having good infrastructure.

Low unemployment. A lot of people having jobs and very few people not having jobs. This means the economy is strong.

low crime rate. This is something that is a lot of trouble for many countries including America and a lot of cities like Toronto.

strong sense of family values. What’s wrong with this? I don’t think anything is wrong with this.

I’ve just listed 5 examples of what 1 in 4 Germans thought was good about the Nazis. If Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper or American President George Bush did all of this, then they would made out to be good.

Essentially, what it comes down to is 1 in 4 Germans looked at the Nazis for what they really for and not just an anti-semitic party that everyone knows them for.

Does this justify for what they did to the jews, political enemies, homosexuals and countless other groups? No

McCann Question – So the Home Office have launched a SECRET review into the case? How do I know?

March 8, 2010 - 1:12 pm 14 Comments

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/madeleinemccann/7384911/Home-Office-launches-secret-review-into-Madeleine-McCanns-disappearance.html

In this report it states (and i quote)

"But with the senior officer in charge Goncalo Amaral now widely discredited and facing financial ruin after being sued for libel by the McCanns over a book he wrote, it may become harder for the Portuguese to refuse the request for a thorough review.

The revelation that possible leads – many passed to Portuguese police by the McCanns’ own private detectives – had apparently been ignored will add to the clamour. "

But Amari was kicked of the case months before it was closed, and the investigating officer who took the case also came to the same conclusion!!!!

Also why did Kate and Gerry meet the home secretary, to "discuss the case" when surely the foreign secretary would have been more able to help

it also states

"Leicestershire Police stand ready to co-ordinate and complete enquiries if further information comes to light in the UK"

So why did the Leicestershire police also "close the case" after they sent the British forensic team over, who also said that Maddy (god bless her) died in the apartment.

Why is all this being ignored by the British press now??
Viper

I think the thumbs down say it all really

I really wish other families with missing children would receive the same amount of attention as the McCanns do.

What a day with Bob Probert!?

March 6, 2010 - 11:24 am 15 Comments

Well a couple days ago, i heard talk that Bob Probert will be in town at a restaurant owned by my best friend’s Dad’s friend, (he’s also the mayors husband). So i went down today and saw he was doing his book launch, so i bought one ($40 later!) and got him to sign it. and the owner walks by, and he knows me, so i see him telling something to Probey, and then i got my book back and this is what it said "To Chris, The toughest guy i ever fought, your pal (insert Probert signature here). i got it back and laughed so hard. so then the owner thought it was funny so he was telling the whole entire Bar (i say restaurant, but it’s really a family sports bar) so everyone got a laugh out of it.

but the coolest thing was, was how normal Probert was, he forgot to pay for his parking in the meter so he had to dig for change in his pocket to go pay the parking meter Lol! He drank a couple cold ones, went out for a smoke time to time and just plain old chatted it up with everyone.
a lot of people didn’t even know he was a famous hockey player!

then i came out of the bathroom and he’s at my table talking with my mom, im like "wtf.. why is Bob Probert at my table with my mom?" so i sat down and he asked me a few questions, we joked around, then he left back to his bar so he could ge this beer Lol!

and in this bar there are 31 flat screen tv’s. including one in the bathroom.. so im taking a piss and i hear footsteps.. and then they stop.. so im like.. okay? so i went to wash my hands, and theres Probert watching the NHL network on the tv in the bathroom LOL! im like what the hell..?

all and all, one of the COOLEST guys you’ll EVER Meet.

i’m pretty sure Joe Kocur was there as well.

it was a hell of a day.
But what was funny was, we kept joking about our "infamous fight" the one that never happened, according to the owner, i "kicked his ass" lol. it was freakin hilarious.
I remember ZAM giving me a very good comparison between Bob Probert and a Zamboni.

we’ll have to ask him that one.
CME- I’ve met a lot of hockey players in my 14 years of living and if theres one that i have the most respect for, is Probert now. What a guy, he always made people laugh.. he wasn’t like sitting at a table to sign books, he just let people come up and ask him. he just blended in with the crowd, and that’s cool.
SAMMY- oh your right, thanks for all your positive comments.
LOL CALE. get outta here with your Robert Plant. Hell, i’m still not sure exactly who he is. :P

Sounds like you had fun. Congrats on getting to meet Bob Probert!

Is anonymity a burden? Does hiding your true identity prevent you from enjoying your fame?

March 4, 2010 - 12:15 pm 5 Comments

Or is it sheer bliss to be able to veil your personal life from the prying eyes of others?

London, Nov 15 (IANS) The anonymous author of three bestselling autobiographical books on a student turning to prostitution – themselves the product of a notorious blog – has been revealed to be a British research scientist.
Dr Brooke Magnanti, a hospital researcher from Bristol, told the Sunday Times she is the pseudonymous blogger of ‘Belle de Jour: Diary of a London Call Girl’, which was chosen by the Guardian as its blog of the year in 2003.
Her blogs were made into three books, including ‘The Intimate Adventures of a London Call Girl’, and a television serial.
Working as a high class escort girl in London, Magnanti, now 34, charged £300 an hour to clients, using the money to fund a PhD in forensic pathology, before embarking on a career researching cancer and neurotoxicology.
The Sunday Times said that until last week, not even her literary agent knew her real name.
A month ago she revealed her double-life to colleagues working at the Bristol Initiative for Research of Child Health, who were ‘amazingly kind and supportive’.
She decided to reveal her identity because anonymity had become ‘no fun,’ she said, adding: ‘I couldn’t even go to my own book launch party’.
The newspaper said the petite scientist has no regrets about her 14 months as a prostitute, telling the paper’s columnist India Knight: ‘I’ve felt worse about my writing than I ever have about sex for money.’
Her blog was also made into a British TV series, prompting speculation she might be a well-known author or even a man.

She can probably kiss her career goodbye! I suspect that means she will return to her previous occupation and charge triple for being famous.

Luc’s Book Launch at Barnsdall

To celebrate the launch of Luc Leestemaker’s book, “The Intentional Artist,” Lineage Dance and the artist/author collaborated on a performance that premiered at the historic Barnsdall Art Park Theatre in Hollywood, CA.

“The Intentional Artist” is a compilation of stories and visual impressions by someone who has lived an unconventional artist’s life. Luc Leestemaker has mined his extensive and varied background in art, theater and the corporate world to create these autobiographical stories, out of which a thread emerges that offers inspired reading for anyone seeking to find or renew their creative way.

Suggestions for African and/or Asian literature?

March 2, 2010 - 3:03 pm 5 Comments

I need to pick a book to use for my book report but we need to pick a book written by an African or Asian author.

I’ve thought about using "The Ring" since its novel was written by a Japanese, but I’d like to keep my options open since our book report is ‘oral’; like having a book launch in our class—we act like we’re the authors and promote it—and I don’t think "The Ring" would be easy to do.

I can’t use "Things Fall Apart" since someone has it already.

Could anyone suggest interesting books? I’m having a hard time looking for something that has nothing to do about oppression and war.
These sound nice, but would I like them?

The Famished Road: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Famished_Road

Disgrace: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disgrace_%28novel%29

These are all works that could be found in English (translated/written in English).

"A Pale View of Hills" is very nice, but in case you don’t find it in your place…

(Chinese-American) Ha Jin’s "A Free Life" is very interesting—it’s about a Chinese family adapting to life in America. One of their children starts working in small jobs in the US as they learn to explore and live to their new life.

"Blue Bloods" by Melissa de la Cruz (Filipino) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Bloods_%28series%29

(Japanese) Miura Tetsuo’s "Shame in the Blood" http://www.complete-review.com/reviews/japannew/miurat.htm

(Japanese) Nisio Isin’s "Death Note Another Note: The Los Angeles BB Murder Cases" is nice, too. I like Death Note and psychological thrillers. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_Note#Light_novels

(Japanese) Haruki Murakami’s translated works:

"Kafka on the Shore" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kafka_on_the_Shore

"The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wind-Up_Bird_Chronicle
