Red and Black in Haiti – Book Launch – Matthew J. Smith Ph.D. part 2

February 10, 2010 - 8:46 pm No Comments

In 1934, the Republic of Haiti celebrated its 130th anniversary as an independent nation. That same year, another sort of Haitian independence occurred, as the United States ended nearly two decades of occupation. In the first comprehensive political history of post-occupation Haiti, historian Matthew Smith argues that the period from 1934 until the rise of dictator François Papa Doc Duvalier in 1957 constituted modern Haitis greatest moment of political promise. He will explore this theme in a lecture based on his recently published book titled Red and Black in Haiti: Radicalism, Conflict, and Political Change, 1934-1957. The lecture is sponsored by Florida International Universitys Latin American and Caribbean Center, School of International and Public Affairs, and Digital Library of the Caribbean, as well as the Haitian Heritage Museum. The event is part of LACCs 12th Annual Haitian Summer Institute.

Bill Parfrey Book Launch 2006 Part 2

December 29, 2009 - 2:28 pm No Comments

Bill was born in Cork in 1926, moving to Cahir and returning in later years, getting married in 1944, Bill documents what it was like to grow up, work and live in these times in Ireland. Throughout his lifetime he grappled with the path he was guided through, leading to his healing and psychic experiences. In the winter of his days, Bill is now 83 years of age, Bill is spiritually strong, but his physical body is wearing out and he has difficulty with vision, walking and requires frequent hospitalisation. He is overwhelmed by the messages of love and prayers which come from all quarters of the country and indeed much further afield. Please be aware that Bill is unable to answer all your emails and letters as it is simply too much for him. Part of the job Bill wanted to fulfill before he departed this world, was to write down his story as it is. It may help you or it may not but this in reality is the last great task which we can ask Bill to complete at this time in his life. With every best wish and blessing to each of you.
