18th September, 2009

The Gloster Canary is one of the most popular breeds of canaries in the world. The most outstanding feature of this bird is the Corona which adorns its head.

For the first time in Malta the enthusiasts of the Gloster Fancy were present for the launching of such a publication of international standing. History has been made. For this occasion four of the most qualified and renowned persons in the world in connection with the Gloster Canary met in Malta at the Grand Hotel Excelsior to attend this historical event. The local enthusiasts felt honoured with their presence. Mr & Mrs. Nick Barret, the authors of this famous book The Gloster Fancy Canary both hailing from Kings Lynn (England), Mr Dave Thomas (Wales) and Mr Peter Warfield (England) said that it was only fair that this publication will be launched in Malta since it was through the zeal and dedication of the Maltese enthusiasts that the world has at its disposal the second edition of this famous book.

Mr Mario Zahra, secretary of the Malta Gloster Breeders Society, explained that when he, personally tried to buy from an internet auction the first edition of this publication (printed in 1987) he was shocked to find out that it was priced $300. Then he realized how difficult it was for any new-comer to this hobby to obtain such a vital tool to breed and enhance the quality of his birds. Immediately he took it to task and contacted Mr & Mrs. Barret. It took a lot of convincing and persuasion to induce them to embark on the publication of this second edition. Now this book is readily available for one and all.
This book is full of scientific and genetic information regarding the Gloster canary. There are in it minute details which include feather & colour mixing, proper maintenance of the birds habitat and also a precise explanation of how to pair these birds.

Mr Zahra reiterated that it was a great satisfaction for local club breeders that the launching of this famous book took place in Malta. It will surely help to enhance the birds quality and increase the interest of newcomers to this hobby.
