Do you think Apple’s iPad will kill Amazon’s Kindle and why?

Apple CEO Steve Jobs unveiled a new touchscreen tablet computer on Wednesday dubbed the "iPad," seeking to carve out a niche between the laptop and the smartphone.

Apple said it would start shipping the iPad, which features a virtual touchscreen keyboard, within 60 days, making them available worldwide in late March. Jobs, who appeared thin but healthy, said Apple was launching an online "iBookstore" for the iPad and touted its abilities as an electronic reader of books, newspapers and magazines.

Some technology analysts expect the iPad to pose a challenge to other e-readers on the market and Jobs made a reference to the e-reader market leader, Amazon’s Kindle.

Do you think Apple’s iPad will kill Amazon’s Kindle and why?

No. The ability to read ebooks on an lcd screen has been around before the Kindle or any other e-reader was available so why should the iPad change anything??

I have an Ipod Touch and I have an Amazon Kindle. Reading on an e-ink screen is much easier on the eyes and that makes a big difference if you like to read a lot. I get a headache reading on an LCD screen and I get tired a lot faster.

Also the Ipad will cost twice as much, and as far as functionality goes, a netbook is half the price and twice as functional. I also own a netbook, and that hasn’t replaced my Kindle.

However, if you must have a tablet to keep up with the Joneses, I would wait until the HP slate has to offer, that will run Windows 7 which is far more functional than the ipod/ipad platform and you would be able to read Kindle books on it. Amazon probably has the best prices and best selection of ebooks right now.

the iPad will kill the Kindle since the iPad does so much more. with 140,000 iPhone apps currently available, the Kindle is no match for the iPad

Touch capability will be the future, so from that aspect, Apple will thrive by bringing new innovations. As of ”kill” It might have a significant lead but other companies will surely have their checks and balances to compete with the Ipad.

I think that the iPad will at least take a considerable percent of the market from Amazon’s Kindle. For a little less than twice the cost of the Kindle, the iPad has 8 times more storage, a much larger screen, WiFi, Bluetooth, and the ability to run apps.

No. I’d ask any of your other responders if they actually OWN a kindle. The Kindle is a niche market. Its not going to cater to a huge amount of people because Americans as a whole do not read much. But for those of us who DO read quite a bit, we’re not going to want to do it on a device that’s backlit and full of other distractions. The Kindle is a dedicated e-reader. That’s all it is. Period. If I want something that does other aps, yeah I’ll pick up something else, but honestly I’d probably get an iTouch before I got an iPad.

What the iPad WILL do is provide reading opportunities imo for people who don’t read much/often or read magazines/newspapers. It will cater to more people in that sense, but it won’t cater to the kindle base that literally buy 5+ books/month to read and only want something that allows them to read.

Different product, different purpose – Kindle is a book library and an excellent one – small, compact. Ipad is a mini laptop.
Personally I’d like both- and an IPhone for mini fun – but have a Blackberry instead which I also love – for a different purpose ie emailing .

Chances seemed high. From the current sales of iphone, (info get from GSMarena), the iphone is a huge success.

The 4th Quater financial report rom Apple: The company posted revenue of 15.68 billion US dollars and a net quarterly profit of 3.38 billion US dollars, which compare really favorably to the numbers from the last three months of 2008 (11.88 billion and 2.26 billion respectively).

From the iphone sales, saying that Apple’s iPad can kill Amazon’s Kindle isnt wrong. If the iphone can be sold so successfully, i wonder why cant the iPad be a successful as iPhone.
